Ecce Faustus

11 Performances
February 5-27, 2016
(inclusive Thu, Fri, Sat)
8:00 – 9:30 PM

Twenty-four years after striking a deal with the devil, a dramatist gathers colleagues and companions in a church sanctuary to witness his newest masterpiece: a phantasmagorical theatrical lamentation. This event is to be at once the pinnacle of his artistic career, the fulfillment of his diabolical bargain, and the surrender of his life.

Situated at a gateway between two contradictory eternities — infinite past and infinite future — and shadowed by the Angel of Death, the dramatist conjures forth from The Book of Faust a maddening rite of wisdom, pride, ego, innocence, transgression, and regret.

Is it a Black Mass or the last flickers of his consciousness?

And where and how will the Faustian impulse be revealed?

Devised by Akropolis Performance Lab, Ecce Faustus is a world premiere theatrical event inspired by the climactic chapters of Thomas Mann’s novel Doctor Faustus and the extraordinary chromatic compositions of Renaissance prince, murderer, and madman Carlo Gesualdo (with 5-part a cappella masterpieces sung live by the cast).

Reviews Are In & Word Is Out About Our Secret Performance

“Poets say the moon is passionate and desirous. Others see an ethical-religious meaning in moonlight. Youth sees the moon as a promise of all those tremendous things which await it; The old find a memento that the promise was never kept, a reminder of all that broke and went to pieces. And what is moonlight?” | Joseph Lavy as Dr. Glas | Photo: Joe Patrick Kane

Although we restricted marketing for The Glas Nocturne to social media and word-of-mouth, word has gotten out quite well. So well, in fact, that we are extending our run by a full week beyond our initial expectation!

If you haven’t yet gotten a seat, we have just 30 available between now and June 7.

Check out some of what’s being said about this truly remarkable performance!

Just 30 seats remain through June 7, so act quickly to get your invitation!

The Glas Nocturne

Is it ever justifiable to take the life of another human being?

APL Co-Artistic Director Joseph Lavy has adapted Hjalmar Söderberg’s scandalous 1905  fin-de-siecle novel, Doktor Glas (1905), into a noir monodrama of psycho-sexual fixation, moral questioning, and murder that pushes APL in new directions.

A chamber drama performed for audiences of no more than 10 at a sitting, this is our most intimate offering to date. Features solo piano nocturnes and evocative Swedish choral settings.

We have crafted this short, night piece to provide an exquisite audience experience with uncommon access to the action and actors* — and audience size is limited to 10 per show. Prepare for a speakeasy-styled adventure: a clandestine affair, held in a publicly undisclosed location revealed only to invitees, run for an as-yet undetermined number of showings, with start times ranging from 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm.
