The performer creates understanding, tension, and transformation on stage through actions and counter-actions. The path to formulating those actions often begins with an impulse, idea, or image. Elaborated over time, these actions are developed into a structure capable of harmonizing the rigors of physical and mental precision with the spontaneous give and take of the performer’s life.

For nearly 25 years, APL’s artistic directors have been researching and defining means of performance creation that break the barriers between performance genres to open up new avenues into the actor’s creative potential — tapping the wellspring of personal imagination and memory to uncover a unique and personal form of expression through body and voice.

Designed for practitioners of theatre, dance, and other modes of physical performance, this workshop introduces participants to a rich approach to performance generation through APL’s signature methodology: Theatre of Polyphony. Theatre of Polyphony demands a mobilization of all the performer’s personal resources at the confluence of poetry, song, movement, dance, imagination, and memory — the lifeblood of Action.
